I guess, the checklist below will help you decide on what kind of switch to
buy:
1. Do you really need to go to switching technology? I guess, it's a must
now. :-)
2. Do you need VLANs? Port-based? MAC based? IP Protocol Based?
Network-Based? User-Defined Based?
3. How about the growth of your company? This will help you decide on the
number of ports.
But if you just like to go fast-ethernet switching, then the above product
will be sufficient. It's really cheap. But remember, ethernet &
fast-ethernet are broadcast domains meaning, they create broadcast storms.
Good switches are able to address this problem through VLANs. You can
create separate networks on a per port basis irregardless of location. This
can only be handled by good switches. Routing, this is another factor. How
about the backplane? How much traffic can it handle?
You have to follow the network heirarchical structure.
