I really like what ubuntu is doing to distribute the distro. Broadband is not available to most people in the philippines and will remain so for quite sometime(I guess). Oh well, maybe more help from Opensource companies will jump start this. Ey! or a spread a distro cd shipping community site! hmmm....

have been sent a 10 pack CD set and i have distributed them to friends at
my hometown of Gabaldon N.E. They really appreciate this since Gabaldon
(remember the storms of nov-dec 2004) doesn't have telephone landlines let
alone Net connection. Now i only have i CD pack of ubuntu 1 live CD and 1
install cd. i have reordered more and waiting for them so i could
distribute the CDs to more people. its in the license agreement anyways.
its nice to hear that. i envy gabaldon because it is still on a much better ground than our little barrio in talavera wherein i dont think i knew anybody having a computer. my mom who is a teacher at the local elementary school still does her report on her trusty typewriter[1]. :(
A little out of topic, our little town as backward as it is have a growing
linux community, mostly newbies but steadily growing nonetheless, it is
also safe to say that Gabaldon have the largest concentration of
individuals that use linux at home in the entire Nueva Ecija province. We
sure wish to be members of the PLUG. or is PLUG just for the linux
elite????
it depends on how you view the word 'elite' and how you interpret 'PLUG membership'.
linux elite is a rank that is only given by people who perceive that these people are better than they are. that is a sign of inferiority complex. all of us are newbies and the OSS scene offers a wide area of knowledge that no single person can master to become an 'elite'.
ill leave the issue of PLUG membership to the board to answer. i do know that PLUG advocates the creation of local user groups to further organize people at the grass-root level , similar to what the davao LUG is doing. i also know that the support mailing lists will always be free to those who want to learn. :)
ciao!

[1] the severe electric flunctuations already killed two old computers that i brought home plus the i dont think computer access is high on the resident's daily survival agenda. :(
