What version of Ubuntu? Check if Ubuntu is properly recognizing the ethernet card. Part of Smart Bro's security is to 'lock in' to the MAC address of the last lan card that it authorized. I've had a few computers directly connect to the Smart Bro's ethernet cable without problems using Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper) -- I just had to authorize each computer (via Smart Bro's portal) everytime I switch computers. It would be much better to connect Smart Bro to a broadband router (and authroize its MAC address) so that any PC you connect to the router's hub can immediately use the internet without authorizing them, since Smart Bro mainly sees the router only, not the PCs behind it.

Recently I had the chance to slip an Ubuntu LiveCD into a friend's computer. The computer had a direct (router-less) Smart Wireless Broadband connection. To my surprise, I wasn't able to connect to the Internet out-of-the-box. I managed to play with the computer for only a minute or two, so if I'm not sure where the problem lay, whether it's because of an (un|mis)recognized LAN card, a DNS/IP problem or something else. Does Smartbro require any special configuration options to work? I've had no problems connecting to PLDT's MyDSL using the Ubuntu 6 LTS CD. Any hints would be appreciated. _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [email protected] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Read the Guidelines: http://linux.org.ph/lists Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
