computer for only a minute or two, so if I'm not sure where the
problem lay, whether it's because of an (un|mis)recognized LAN card, a
DNS/IP problem or something else.
Meridian Telekoms, which provides net services for SmartBro and PLDT
MyDSL, should provide an IP address to your friend's PC of the form
192.168.xxx.yyy with a netmask of 255.255.224.0. If /sbin/ifconfig does
not give this IP address, then the network card was probably not recognized
by Ubuntu LiveCD.

Having gotten this IP address does not mean you can connect to the Net.
If the network card is different from the one originally registered with
SmartBro, you will be asked to re-authenticate with your friend's SmartBro
login name and password.

My experience with SmartBro has been very positive. I have connected
a LinkSys WRT54GL wireless router to the SmartBro line from the
microwave antenna. I think the "L" in WRT54GL is for the router's Linux OS.
I have a desktop (triple-booting to Fedora6/CentOS4.4/WinXP) wired to
the router, and up to four laptops wirelessly connecting to the router,
depending on the number of children currently at home (1 father + 3 children).
My only complaint is that PHP999.00 per month gives me only 384Kbits/sec,
which translates to Firefox download speeds of 32-44KBytes/sec.
A fellow faculty member in Ateneo tells me that his PHP999.00 /month
subscription entitles him to speeds of 768Kbits/sec using Globe DSL (wired).

I'm stuck with SmartBro, because while it is true that I have two PLDT
landlines at home, there are no DSL ports available in the PLDT exchange
within DSL distance from my house.

I asked for the stars, but God gave me the moon. I am not complaining,
since if I ever need to download a 3.8GB installation DVD, I can always
do it in Ateneo.
