I'd guess that it all depends on the applications. In the early
2000's, when I was still with Check Point Software, we had the early
versions of VPN-1 / Firewall-1 for Red Hat Linux compiled with gcc.
Even then, shunting the packets between interfaces was much faster
than MS Windows Server, 10% to 20% improvement (if I remember
correctly), even when using the Security Servers (versions of
proxies). I don't know now because I'm long gone from them already.
