Well the old versions of windows had a notably crappy network stack...
but all things being equal.

ex. MacOS is compiled with the Intel (or is it Metrowerks) compiler
and is FreeBSD-based. In my (limited) experience, MacOS X on
equivalent hardware is far snappier than either Windows or Linux. But
that's psychological... it would be interesting to have comparisons.
