(1) How about having existing contributors mentor wannabe contributors?
Organize a codefest or some workshop and invite/encourage people (especially
students) who are willing to learn and contribute to FOSS. And oh, join
Google SOC.

(2) Think BIG and OWN your contributions and make sure it is something that
most people really need or want.

(3) Find a really obscure hardware and make drivers for it. Or for those
30ish people <wink><wink>, plug your hacked vacuum tube and see what you can
do with it.

Personally, I don't really think that contributing to open source just
because you need geek-pride is enough. People who've been around for a while
have much deeper reasons than that. I don't think the motivation and the
attitude that you're gonna need is any different in working for a company
either. You still need to grow, communicate, and especially do hard-work.
It's just that open-source is more fun and the community is there to help
you out and you can do anything you want, and who knows maybe someone with a
specific need later on will find your project useful. But that's just an
extra.

Everyone can contribute to FOSS. It's just that not everyone has the the
right attitude and the right motivation in doing so.

Regards

Jan
