You might want to look at PEAR::MBD2 (http://pear.php.net/package/MDB2)

It's the PEAR database abstraction layer that you can use, so your
application can connect to the database, irregardless which database server
it is stored.

There is a local PHP Users Group, you might as well check them out for
advise.
