Probably grub was corrupted, did you try to re-install grub? It should do
the trick, as for you other concern i.e., recover your files, you can use a
live cd then copy your files via network or usbdisk or any other means
available. You can also attach that same disk to another linux workstation
you have, mount the partition you want to copy and you're good to go.
