At the very least, large non-Open companies regularly invite everyone, journalists included, to sumptuous lunches (don't ask me how I know!) during which they feed the journalists dodgy stories. It's a living!
So it's understandable that the non-technical journalists just parrot what the marketing managers of these companies tell them.
