And yet IBM doesn't want to buy Sun to save it from
impending doom... after IBM themselves have profited
handsomely from Java and usurped Java standards (e.g.
Eclipse vs. Swing)

Where's the soul in that? :-)

IBM went from being the stodgiest company around to adopting
Linux and the open source mantra because they couldn't see
any other way to compete with NT. Anybody ever remember AIX ?

It was a smart move but provoked by the desire to survive
and not out of any "goodness of the soul". See

Microsoft, as of late, is also starting to "get" open source.
Everyone assumes they're too "evil" to do that, but the
reality is that their FUD against open source has fallen
on deaf ears. They have seen the handwriting on the wall
and are finally deciding to get real. The marketplace is
a great disciplinarian. ;-)
