I concur with this observation. We had a case wherein our developers was told straight up by Microsoft engineers that the API function they were using in the product code for interfacing with Windows was undocumented and unsupported.
That said. I still believe in in using the appropriate tools according to situation.
IMHO, opensource grew out of the need for more customization and control for one's benefit. After all, what company would want to be held hostage to another's agenda or roadmap.
