Greg, I have no experience with Qnap but you should consider Drobo. No experience with Drobo also but seems like a great product.
As to manufacturing, there's a lot of great products made in China or Taiwan. Not all are the same though. You just have to make sure you have warranty. Read forums and reviews. Speaking of warranty. I use HP Procurve switches. The vendor claims LIFETIME warranty for all HP Switches or it's just the Procurve series. Anyone here actually made use of LIFETIME warranty or RMA?
