I did:

I'm thinking that /dev might have gotten mis tgzed or un-tgzed.  so
possibly some entries there just have the wrong perms.

anyway, it's almost the weekend.  I'll keep this drive around over
saturday, but I think I'll just reinstall saturday night or sunday
morning :-).
