you could have also tried backing-up your old kernel including its /lib/modules/<old-kernel modules> and tried rebooting it... but there is no substitute for back-ups if you are going into unknown territories of upgrading your current system. you can also ask #debian users in irc.freenode.net for more specific debian-related info. the debian "dpkg bot" has a very good collection of advice :).
