1.  Just the defaults of pbuilder.
2.  You may be right about the ramdisk.

A couple of more important surfaced because of Pedring so this is on the 
backburner for a day or two.

What arguments are you using to compile the kernel?
Is the 'stamp-build-area' used for a ramdisk?

Try doing a mount during the compile/link phase to check if its creating a 
ramdisk.  Isn't that what fakeroot does?
