It's a bit late for a reply on this, but I wanted to point out that one of the original purposes of a display manager was to allow the user to select a host to manage the display. Think X terminal. Someone using an X terminal typically needs to be able to choose a host on which to run X client applications. xdm can display a chooser window which lists the hosts that are available.
