Rockbox works on most iPod models, but not all.  Doesn't work on mine.
I use gtkpod to get music on and off it.

Interestingly, the 0S X side of my old iMac (on which I dual-boot OS
Xv10.2 "Jaguar" and Debian Lenny) will no longer work with my iPod.
You can only install up to a certain older version of iTunes, which is
too old to cooperate with a needed version of the iPod-updating
software that comes bundled with iTunes.  So to move music to and from
my Mac and my iPod, I have to boot into Linux.

Is that what they mean by "Think Different"?
