I believe crossed wiring is not the same as null. The term crossed
comes from the appearance of a ribbon cable at the solder-side of a
DB9 plug: the ribbon cable has every other wire going to the bottom
row of DB9 pins and the remaining going to the top row of pins. I may
have muddied the waters by using the term crossover instead of
crossed.

If a MB connector designed for a straight through cable is connected
to a DB9 using a crossed cable, the pins will have the wrong signals,
i.e.:
expected will be
DCD will be DCD
RX will be TX
TX will be GND
DTR will be RTS
GND will be RING
DSR will be RX
RTS will be DTR
CTS wiil be DSR
RING will be CTS

I would be surprised if a null anything could straighten this out.
