Wow! I didn't think it was possible to upgrade between major versions of RHEL/Centos. It certainly isn't supported. My guess is that you ended up with an older config file that conflicts with a newer rpm. Look at your *.rpmsave's and *.rpmnew's for things that look different from your config files. Then read the newly installed man pages for those to see what to fix.
