Ouch.  This will be tough without the user and group files.  If you
are still logged in as a regular user you won't have wright access to
/etc/ since you can't su root.

The etc tree skeleton resides on the original slackware DVD under

slackware[64]/a/etc-14.1-x86[-64]-2.txz

You *might* be able to boot the slackware dvd, chroot (so you will now
be "root" into the harddrive install, then "installpkg" this package.
 You will have to then reconfigure lilo, users, networks, etc., in the
chroot environment.

This "should" work, but I have not personally had to try it.  I have
done this trick to fix the /boot directory and lilo.

Alternatively, you can remove the harddrive and mount it in a known
good slackware install and copy that /etc/ tree over as root...with
appropriate adjustments as needed.
