As mostly a user now I find Linux Mint (LTS versions) with the Mate desktop manager works great. For servers I've started moving to Debian.
I started with Redhat 3.0.3, moved up the version chain with them for awhile, then did Fedora, finally CentOS (and with a smattering of the other Redhat based spin offs.)
