The difficulty, of course, and this goes without saying in today's world, is that printers have been one of the leading edges of customer abuse and just keep getting worse. I was reminded again today reading Cory Doctorow's rant on the subject: https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/07/inky-wretches/
I have heard the positive reviews of Brother products and the (at least then) lack of vendor lock on consumables, but in contrast, I inherited a Brother Inkjet MFC_J497DW a couple years ago and it *does* seem to require chipped ink cartridges and does all the other obnoxious things, like refusing to print black and white documents when the cyan cartridge ink level falls below what it considers an admirable amount of remaining ink. I am the last person to complain about not answering the question asked (and please continue, it might help someone, possibly even me) but to really feel confident, I need to know that *this model* won't screw me over. Again, thanks all for the replies! When the revolution comes, the lawyers can breathe a sigh of relief as they enjoy their temporary reprieve until the mob finishes with the people making printers. -- Russell
