hi ina,

used to have this problem after compiling the kernel and rebooting the
machine. BEFORE compiling the modules, re:

# make modules
# make modules_install

GO FIRST to /lib/modules and rename (or better yet delete ;>) the
directory of the current kernel modules. (i.e. 2.2.5-25) then proceed with
the modules compilation. 

on the next reboot, these depmod dependency will go away (crossing
fingers ;->)
