Hi guys,
Became a Masochist past week.
Multi-boot setup:
-Win98
-RedHat 7.0
-Mandrake 7.2
-FreeBSD 4.2
Any BSD admins there? Hello?
FreeBSD, my review after 3 days of fidling...
Skills Needed:
- You must be an accomplished Linux Admin first.
- You will fiddle for some sleepless nights.
Performance:
- Server: Faster than Linux (PHP,MySQL,Apache)
- KDE: Faster than Linux
- Disc access: Faster than Linux
built in Journaling File System
Convenience:
- /stand/sysinstall: automatically installs and deinstalls
all your software (like rpm with
a menu). There is only one distro.
so there's no confusion.
Compatibility:
- Netscape 4.76 Flawless
- VNC Viewer runs
- StarOffice 5.2 runs
My Conclusion:
- Server, da best!
- Security, da best!
- Desktop, if the BSD people put their minds to it,
and since KDE and Gnome is generic to unix,
Desktop could be on par with the best of Linux.
