I guess the old school habits die hard, eh? Or do you have a natural
tendency to go into croesus-mode?

I wouldn't really know much about upgrading. My policy has just been,
backup all data then reinstall from scratch.
I started with mdk 7.2 on one of my units and while waiting for mdk 8.0,
decided to install 8.0 beta.
Now that I have both 8.0 and freq, I found myself too lazy to take
everything down.
Energiya, as I like to call it, is still running beta 1 on a 2.4.6-2mdk
kernel taken from cooker.

Aside from Ian's notes, I have none.
