I did an idle "ps" on my RH7.1 desktop, and here are some of the more
egregious offenders, with comments:
X font server: 14MB
-- wow, 14MB for Verdana and Arial? =)
X server: 84MB
-- and I remember the time I ran XAnim, Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold, and a
bunch of rxvt's (because rxvt was more memory-sparing than xterm) on my
8MB 486dx2 with Slackware 3.0
-- granted that 84MB contains 32MB of frame-buffer, but 62MB footprint?!
Nautilus: 37MB (no windows open, just desktop icons)
-- this is probably the worst. No windows open! just drawing "orly's
house" and the CDROM icon!!
wombat: 11MB (dunno what this is)
evolution-alarm-notify: 11MB (this is NOT evolution itself)
-- this is how far "xbiff" has come.. =(
mozilla: 66MB
-- 66MB for a browser. and we complain about IE 5.5 "bloatware" =)
gnome-terminal: 9MB
-- on my original 486, I'd be swapping with just ONE of these.. oh wait,
the machine would be dead due to that immense 84MB X server footprint
bash: 5MB
-- even the shell is no longer immune to bloat. Funny, bash-2.0.5 doesn't
feel any better than the bash-1.x i used long ago..
slapd: 35MB
-- hmmm.. and all of this was unshared memory
lament: 50MB
-- this is the SECOND WORST. 50MB for a SCREEN SAVER. dontcha love it.
ps: 3MB
-- even ps is showing its girth..
with friends like these, who needs Microsoft? =)
