You obviously don't know me enough Dek. ;>
I've used KDE, and "swore by it". I've used GNOME, and "swore by it" too. Now I'm
using Xfce and I'm swearing by it more than I've sworn by any of the two, and I've
used this longer than I used GNOME or KDE. While indeed GNOME and KDE are more
"wholistic" environments of sorts, Xfce is a lean mean fighting machine. And it's not
like that because of coincidence. That's one of the main points of the Xfce
development, and it hasn't changed. New modules have been added: the capability to
handle GNOME and KDE applications and menus, its own native Samba viewer, and more,
and yet the entire system is still nowhere near the bloat of KDE or GNOME.
The look is also very un-MicrosoftWindows, and I like that. I despise the StarOffice
start button. I despise the KDE "K". I despise the GNOME foot. And now that I'm used
to not having it, I despise the screen real estate that the taskbar robs me off. With
Xfce and xmodmap I'm able to customize the keyboard settings such that all three
"Windows keys" are mapped to usable functions. And when I say usable I mean usable.
I've mapped the left Windows key to load the Debian application menu (that most if not
all proper Debian packages have entries for that are updated via the update-menus
script). More importantly I've mapped the left Windows keys to load the WindowList
function of Xfce that allows me to switch between applications with no need to use
Alt+Tab or have some taskbar list (which I don't think Xfce has and I'm glad for it).
> TRY KOFFICE bwahahahahahahahah
I would if not for all those ghastly dependencies that I'll clutter the server up
with. :-(
