IMHO there are two possible reasons:
1. They DO know it is wrong, but are rationalizing, much like terrorists
do, rationalizing their actions, believing they are right to the point
of death but nevertheless, hiding behind a cloak of secrecy.
2. The psuedonym is part and parcel of the game, (if that is, they
consider this all an elaborate game). The earliest hackers at MIT used
nicks, but I suppose that was because they were the kids who idolized
comic characters and later got hooked on to D&D and XYZZY. This practice
of using nicks to uniquely identify oneself took on a whole new meaning
during the virus-creation years (early 80's to 90's).

I agree, if the public cannot be persuaded to differentiate hacker from
cracker, let's divide them both into criminals and non-criminals.
At least the, most people can understand.
