Hello everyone.
I've been trying to figure out a way to build a pure Linux web browsing
appliance (ala Larry Ellison's / Oracle's NIC--New Internet Computer) using
readily-available off-the-shelf PC components. Siyempre, it's got to be
dirt cheap. Target cost <= $300.
Then I realized, hey, there must a lot of guys & girls here in Pinas to get
this off the ground easy, right?
Well, how's about we give this a try? Anybody up to the challenge?
For those who have nothing better to do during your weekends,
weekdays/weeknights, and holidays :) here are our goals:
1. Linux OS with web browser on cheapest PC platform
2. Dialup and broadband capable
3. Medyo stylish ang box, but also the interface
4. Siyempre it's got to be faaast!
5. Dapat reliable (so dapat medyo quality ang mga component)
6. Dapat pwedeng mag-print to any current Epson or HP printer
7. Walang hard disk, so boot from CD (innovative talaga ang NIC ni Mr.
Ellison, ano?)
If anyone else wants to add/remove/clarify to the above, by all means! As
long as we meet our cost objective.
I was thinking about Embedded Linux, SBC, etc... Any way just to get the
cost of the hardware down. Then I realized that sourcing the components is
costly. Oh well, looks like we're back to using Duron/Celeron/Cyrix.
PII-class CPUs with 32MB (?) should work well too, but again sourcing may
be
a problem.
Sana we can do this. Who knows, maybe we can showcase our PICA-box!
Btw, I know some people who just might want to buy some boxes so may reward
din! Count me in, too! :)
Haha... I love what the Internet is doing for us!
Sincerely,
Ted
