We've done this, in Iloilo, using Linksys WAP-11's and Hyperlink sector and omnidirectional antennas. 4km with a 10dBi omni on one side, and a 14dBi sector on the other side, at 1Mbps, was no problem. Air link latency about 2ms. HOWEVER: (a big however) the low-loss Breezecom LMR-400 RF cable actually inserts about 7dB of loss for a 50m length! it's horrible! to get that performance, we had to put the Linksys pole-top in a weatherproof box (so that only a 1.5m cable connected it to the antenna) and we "hacked" the Cat-5 cable to carry about 7VDC on one of the unused pairs (home-made power over Ethernet). The antennas and stuff will cost even more than the AP in the long run. A better idea would be the Cisco 350 ruggedized: it already does power over ethernet, it already is weatherproof. But it costs a lot ($2000 I think for just the AP). AGAIN I must stress: do NOT do this in the Meralco franchise area. Meralco as we all know has made pakyaw the entire 2.4GHz ISM band here in Metro Manila and Regions 3/4. They WILL raid you, just ask ASTI :) --- Orlando Andico <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mosaic Communications, Inc. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
