It's definitely useful in identifying what generation of hard drive
you're talking about.  Remember, other things being equal, newer hard 
drives tend to be faster, because of improvements in size (smaller = 
faster seeking) and rotational speed.

The common perception that "ATA133" and such lead to higher performance
is caused by the fact that the hard drives in question genuinely _are_
faster (for reasons having nothing to do with the theoretical maximum
bus transfer rate).
