That's the problem with those chkconfig or
update-rc.d... It's too Linux distro centric.

What if you use redhat and don't know Debian
vice-versa?

Understanding System V init, you can configure
startup/shutdown scripts not only for Redhat or
Debian but also Solaris, Reliant, SCO and a host
of others.
