Not just a form of intellectual piracy, it IS PIRACY, from the strict
definition of the term.  You were granted a license (the GPL) to use
the software you received, and the license grants you this right only if
you will return all of your changes back if you redistribute it.  If you
refuse to abide by those terms, then you have no legal right whatsoever
to make use of the software in any way.
