Hi, As a start I guess, one of the best things he should do is subscribe to this list and browse the previous achives. From time to time information on job opening, announcement, etc. comes. There's an active LUG in Davao and in fact they have just conducted technical sessions. His contribution to the community is highly appreciated.
Taking about distro, it doesn't matter. The more knowledgeable he is, the higher his market value :-) Hope this helps.
