The BIOS reports a read error on its first attempt to read the drive, prior
to loading anything. I've used a diagnostic utility from the Maxtor
website, and it reports the drive as having failed testing. So it must be a
drive problem, and not a file system or OS problem.

The drive hasn't been dropped or anything. It just stopped being readable
while under normal use. It's less than 2 years old, and was used on a home
desktop PC.
That's definitely a drive problem. Unfortunately, I was simply hoping it was a partition problem. Then maybe I could help. My data recovery skills are somewhat limited at the moment =)

I've read about data recovery companies in the US, but I haven't heard of
any in the Philippines.
Having researched this field here a few months ago, I didn't see anyone doing data recovery here in the Philippines. Is the data really that crucial? Because if it is, then might as well send it to the US. Some companies do the analysis at around $200. Then charge on a drive-size basis (how many Gigs the drive is) if possible to recovery. If it's not crucial but a bunch of personal files (pictures, mp3s, etc.), then tough luck. Buy a CD Burner, and burn regularly. I learned that lesson the hard way before.

Good luck!
