Don't use FTP AT ALL. Period.  Unless you're doing anonymous FTP.
Please use SCP or SFTP to do your file transfers.  And while you're at
it, stop using Telnet and use SSH instead.  Strong authentication is an
absolute REQUIREMENT in this day and age, most especially if your
computer is directly connected to the Big Bad Internet.  I have no idea
why people still insist on making use of these protocols, which should
be considered obsolete and dangerous.
