In as much as I don't want to be off-topic but the British educational system does not necessary alienate the students from in-classroom learning. It's just done in a different way. The traditional all lecture classes is no longer effective - I know, been working with the Director for Instruction of UP for quite a while.
Students learning on their own should be strengthened by interactions with other students and the teacher in contrast to what is happening now -- spoon feeding or worse! [di lang spoon fed, pre-chewed pa!] This is what I am employing in my courses in UP Computer Science. I act as facilitator and 'validator'. I let my students do the research (I guide them) and let them present it to class (to instill on them the confidence in presenting publicly with hopes that they will be doing it often in conferences and seminars) - after which, I encourage discussions among their peers. I have been doing this for quite awhile even in my joint-class with M.I.T. (not Mapua ha!). --o000o-- Prof. Rommel Palma Feria, MSc, MIEEE, MACM Director, University Computer Center University of the Philippines - Diliman Quezon City 1101 Philippines Voice: +63 2 9268837 Fax: +63 2 9204803 ----------------------------------------- Original Message: From: Marc Henry Galang <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Philippine Linux Users Group Mailing List <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thu Nov 13 12:50:25 EST 2003 Subject: Re: [plug] [OT] Programming in the Philippines. British? ugh! worst, its more on personal learning than in-classroom learning, lots of assignments and research but less lectures and in-class exercises. End result, students learn with their own understading of the course, which mostly is incorrect. I think the US education system is quite better, I think we only need to circumvent flaw and to improve it.
