1. download this:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/linux-2.4.25.tar.bz2

(http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.4.tar.bz2 is the
newest so you might want to try that instead)


2. tar Ixvf linux-2.4.25.tar.bz2

3. read linux-2.4.25/INSTALL

4. profit


i also hunted down the kernel-HOWTO for you. now it resides here pending
review at tldp.
