1> unpack your kernel
2> apply patches (optional)
3> cd linux.x.x
3> # make config (or menuconfig/xconfig )
4> # make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
5> # cp /usr/src/linux.x.x/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
(rename or whatsoevah)
6> check/review boot loader -> new kernel
In Debian (GNU/Linux) , there are only 3 easy steps,
and it applies much cleaner.
