I am currently consulting for a company and have plans to deploy a Linux server for them in the near future. Since I am most familiar with Slackware, that is the distro I am planning to install on it.
A possible server configuration would be:
Samba - to act as file server for Windoze XP clients Firebird - for the database server Apache and perhaps an FTP daemon
Now, once this is setup, I would like to hand over maintenance to a competent sysadmin. What I'd like to know is how many local Linux professionals would be competent enough to maintain a Slackware-based server versus say, a Redhat/Suse one?
I haven't used Debian, but I have a feeling it is similar to Slackware in that eschews 3rd party GUI tools whose advantage is mainly cosmetic so my guess is that someone who's comfortable with Debian should feel quite at home with Slackware.
But what about those who breathe Redhat and/or Suse? Would they do a good job of maintaining this server?
