yep. I know what you are saying. Was silently complaining about this bloat creep 4years ago. I was dual booting win2k and Linux debian/rh/mandrake, so same hardware throughout. default installation and roughly appropriate productivity software for both. windows is still faster overall in user desktop experience. That's why my desktop computer right now is windowsXP. The problem is that Linux distro just install the OS and everything without optimizing itself for desktop use. As what you're saying, the bloat can be fixed by experienced users by switching to say, using Windows managers like icewm or blackbox. that's what I do too. Why don't the Linux distro makers do it one step further? Why don't they give the user a configuration matrix of software where the user can choose to what type of computer they have(low, med., high) or express installation where the distro automatically choose which set of desktop software to use depending on the rough example below: Type CPU Memory window manager low 486-p166 8-16 fvwm95, icewm, olvwm medium p200-500 32-64 windowmaker, afterstep, xfce high p1GHz-up 256-up gnome, kde In that way, people will not perceive Linux as bloat. but a faster desktop experience overall. regards, Andre -- Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Official Website: http://plug.linux.org.ph Searchable Archives: http://marc.free.net.ph .
