On Slackware 10 and many other distros you will see that they have switched over to using X.org's distribution of X11 (based on XFree86 4.4.0rc2) instead of the one from Xfree86.
It seems that the XFree organization has been alienating people left and right ever since they booted out Keith Packard last year.
The future of the Linux desktop and X seems to be in the hands of the freedesktop.org people now. Turns out there's lots of exciting new technology being done there: Glitz, CairoGraphics, etc...
Considering Longhorn's Avalon is still 3 years away, it looks Linux may indeed have a fighting chance in the GUI department. (Keith Packard's essays on keithp.com are a /must read/ for anyone interested in future *nix GUI technologies)
The fact that there is now a kind of a fork may not be welcome news but I wonder how many capable hackers are really still left in XFree86.
Reading up on the history of XFree vs. Keith Packard, I find completely ridiculous how someone (David Wexelblat) who says he doesn't use X anymore is on the XFree86 'Core team'. Apparently, XFree has finally disbanded this 'Core Team'. I wonder if there's any chance of these people rejoining their efforts... or may be anyone who's anyone will just be joining the freedesktop.org efforts.
Does anyone also know X.org's efforts relate to freedesktop.org's?
Will the freedesktop.org people be maintaining and releasing new versions of the Xorg server?
