Well it seems that XFree86 was stagnating under dawes (?) and friends. If 
you look at the latest neat stuff (e.g. antialiasing in the server..) it's 
keithp and friends' work.

lots of people deride X for being bloaty, but having a network-transparent 
rendering system is pretty useful. i think X will always have a place, and 
i cast an evil eye on initiatives like GGI and berlin.  :D
