For whatever it's worth I have a pair of HP DL380s running Debian
GNU/Linux 3.0r2 with a custom-built Linux 2.4.26 kernel for a client,
and they're running fine (internal RAID, external storage array, hotplug
DAT40 tape drive).

If i use bf24, will it not be sufficient or there will be some drivers needed? Is it ok if you can share your kernel config, and links for third party drivers you downloaded if any for our reference for those who would prefer debian as against rh. Hows the performance and what applications it is specifically installed for? Thanks.
