Well, I was reading the article in INQ7 and the teacher was talking about getting a computer for his KID. That he was happy that finally, finally, he could afford a computer for his house thanks to DepEd. Arguably, the kid ought to be better off with Linux, so we don't drain dollars and so on and so forth. I know all the arguments about how it's more "strategic" to do our own homegrown IT infrastructure, etc. But practically, for the kid-of-the-public-school-teacher who can hardly afford a computer, I submit that said kid is better off knowing how to point-and-drool thru M$ software. Not everyone can be a Linux/OSS "rocket scientist" like most everyone on this list.... besides, have you seen our beloved GMA's scheme to get more $$$? it's FARMING. of the intellectual sort. We farm people and turn them into call center/medical transcription/whatnot drones. We can't compete in REAL farming (i can't find local garlic in the mall groceries anymore! they're awash with taiwan garlic!) so we farm people. Sigh. And farmed people (who will "save our country" as it were because we will get $$$ to keep the crooked government from becoming fiscally insolvent) had BETTER know their M$ point and drool. .. > As for magpakahirap sa Linux, I will not disagree with you on this but > it is getting easier everyday (maybe not but every month, sige heheh). > We, in UP, are training teachers and staff to use OpenOffice.org and I submit that the average UP teacher cannot be compared to the average teacher in this misbegotten country. :P I hate to sound so cynical, but something EVERYONE on this list should know real good is, the vast majority of our countrymen (P.S. teachers included) are far dumber than you people reading this email. -- Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Official Website: http://plug.linux.org.ph Searchable Archives: http://marc.free.net.ph .
