My guess is that you don't have the X config file properly set up. I've been using nVidia's drivers for well over a year now with absolutely no issues. Well, one issue which is persistent, and that is that I cannot go back to text mode after X. But I can live with that given the performance of OpenGL. I run TuxRacer at 1280x1024 with all options set to highest detail and still consistently pull 60-100 frames per second. Scorched3d runs at 1600x1200 and can generally pull 30 fps unless I drop a Death Head on somebody. If you're having trouble with the driver, I would suggest going through your config file and making sure it's all in there properly.
