Hey Jijo,

Jijo is my cousin. Dido is me. Don't confuse the two of us. Our fathers may be brothers but we are quite distinct people. :D

Given the increase in Meralco's rates (has anyone noticed), it may actually cost you 100 USD just to run the electricity for your hardware (switch, DSL modem, UPS, server, and an airconditioner). Been hosting our site in the states for the last five years. So far (knock on wood), we've never gone down and we've never lost data.

Hardware reliability issues affect everyone involved with system administration sooner or later, and your suggestion is simply outsourcing the problem for someone else to deal with. Granted, they'll probably do a better job than I will, being professionals at that business and all, and yes, we do have some systems hosted abroad, but in some cases it's just not possible: the nature of the application sometimes requires that the machine be physically hosted here. Given that data center colo here is generally many times tha US$100 you quote, it seems to us more economical over the life span of such applications as we have to do self-hosting. And hardware reliability thus becomes our problem.
