It should've... save that the WRT54G isn't really reknowned for its
range or signal quality (although I'm itching to "ruggedize" one for
outdoor usage by ripping it out and placing it in a water-proof
electrical enclosure... just need to find a local seller of LMR-400
cables and antenna adaptors then construct my own power over ethernet
injector and I'm off :D). It's notorious though for being hackable -
you could even place a lot of apps if you'd flash the firmware (well,
as long as they all would run within 16MB of memory...)
 
As for the wild outdoors... trees are a bit of a problem for wireless
networks, as they appear to be big walls of water that can attenuate
the signal.
