Bingo. for desktop, i really don't care about the 64bit. Useful though when 
64 bit OS/Apps  would be widespread/mature in the future.

To add why it's better for a desktop: 
1. Cool n quite technology as you've said.
2. Benchmarks are alluding it to be roughly the same or faster compared to 
a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 & almost half the price too. 
3. Better with games overall compared to a Pentium.

To the orig poster, yes amd64 is worth it. But if you can wait for a few
months, the better. dual core CPU from Intel/Amd will come out, thus 
pushing the prices even lower.
